Town Votes $735,000 to Acquire 91 Old Colony Lane, Blocking Heliport
Key Points
- $735,000 borrowing authorized for land acquisition
- Directly blocks a proposed commercial heliport and settles a developer lawsuit
- Future use restricted to affordable housing and/or open space
- Historical house on the property may be preserved for affordable housing
In a strategic move to prevent the development of a commercial heliport, Article 11 was approved by a two-thirds majority. The article authorizes the town to borrow $735,000 to purchase a one-acre parcel at 91 Old Colony Lane. The land, which sits adjacent to the airport, was recently acquired by a developer who proposed a heliport and filed a lawsuit against the town. Town Counsel Robert Galvin stated the acquisition would settle the lawsuit and give the town control over the site.
The article was amended by resident Pam Keith to restrict the land's future use specifically to affordable housing and/or open space,
removing a broader general municipal purpose
clause. Concerns were raised by some residents about the $735,000 price tag, but Galvin noted the property was appraised higher due to its commercial potential. Historical Commission co-chair Cindy Castro added that the house on the site has historical significance dating back to the 1600s, and residents expressed a strong desire to see the building preserved rather than demolished.
Motion: The select board moves that the town will vote to borrow the sum of $735,000 for acquisition cost to enable the town to acquire for affordable housing and or open space a certain parcel of land known as and numbered 91 Old Colony Lane.
Vote: Passed by 2/3 Majority
