Town Allocates $475,000 for Community Media via Cable Fees
Key Points
- $475,000 appropriated for Marshfield Community Media
- Funds are derived from cable franchise fees, not the general tax fund
- Ensures continued broadcast coverage of town government and community events
Town Meeting approved Article 15, appropriating $475,000 to support Marshfield Community Media. Officials emphasized that the funding does not come from the general tax levy, but is instead generated through franchise fees paid by cable subscribers.
Select Board member Steve Darcy described the article as annual housekeeping,
explaining that state law requires these restricted funds to be formally appropriated by Town Meeting. There's an additional fee that you pay on your cable bill that essentially funds community access,
Darcy said.
The funding supports PEG (Public, Educational, and Governmental) access services, providing the town with equipment and staffing to broadcast local government meetings and community programming. The motion passed by a majority voice vote.
Motion: To appropriate $475,000 for PEG access services from cable franchise revenue.
