Sewer Bylaw Updated to Limit One Connection per Lot for ADU Alignment
Key Points
- Formalizes "one connection per lot" standard for town sewer
- Aligns sewer regulations with new Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) policies
- Aims to reduce infiltration and pressure on sewer mains
Marshfield has formalized a long-standing practice regarding sewer infrastructure with the passage of Article 32. The amendment to the town's sewer connection bylaw establishes a one connection per lot
standard, specifically to align with the town's policies on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).
Town Engineer Matt Kinland explained that the update clarifies regulations originally set in 1979. The goal is to minimize the impact on sewer mains and reduce groundwater infiltration. It ensures new sewer regulations are aligned with our ADU policy,
Kinland said. While resident Kelly Peterson expressed concerns about how the rule might affect landlocked lots, Building Commissioner Andrew Stewart clarified that while sewer is a factor in buildability, this bylaw change is specifically designed to protect existing infrastructure and ensure ADUs piggyback
onto existing connections rather than creating new ones.
