Town Meeting Postponed To June 15 As Officials Face Deficit Resolution
Key Points
- Remaining financial articles and FY27 budget postponed to June 15
- Resident resolution demands answers on the $7 million deficit
- Select Board must respond to financial management concerns by May 29
- Preparation delays cited for the split meeting format
Marshfield's Annual Town Meeting was postponed until June 15th following the reading of a pointed resolution regarding the town's current financial crisis. The resolution, submitted by resident Tom Whan, called for the Select Board to explain a $7 million deficit, high staff turnover in the finance department, and the lack of a full-time Town Administrator for over a year. The Moderator noted that by law, the Select Board must respond to the resolution within 30 days.
Because of delays in finalizing the FY27 budget, the Moderator moved to postpone all remaining financial articles, including the operating budget. The postponement comes as the Advisory Board and Select Board struggle to address a fiscal cliff
driven by rising costs and a massive drawdown
of reserves. Voters will return to the high school bleachers in mid-June to conclude the town's business for the year.
Motion: To postpone the Special and Annual Town Meeting until June 15th.
