Budget Debate Postponed to June 15 Amid $7 Million Deficit Concerns
Key Points
- Financial warrant articles and FY27 budget deferred until June 15, 2026
- Town facing a $7 million deficit and criticism over a year-long Town Administrator vacancy
- Resident resolution demands more transparency regarding financial staff turnover
Marshfield Town Meeting has been adjourned until June 15, 2026, leaving major financial decisions, including the FY27 operating budget and proposed tax overrides, in limbo. The postponement was announced after voters completed the non-financial portion of the warrant.
The delay comes as the town faces a projected $7 million deficit and ongoing leadership transitions. Before the adjournment, Moderator Jim Cantwell read a resolution from resident Tom Whan calling on the Select Board to explain a year without a full-time Town Administrator and what he described as inconsistent/non-existent budget management.
Articles 2 through 7 of the Annual Town Meeting warrant, which include the town's primary spending plans, will be the focus when the meeting reconvenes at Marshfield High School. Several other articles, including Article 33 regarding stormwater management, were indefinitely postponed and will not be heard this year.
Motion: To postpone the Special and Annual Town Meeting until June 15th.
