Town Meeting Approves $2.5 Million for 10 Community Preservation Projects

Key Points

  • $1.175 million approved for MHS ball field lighting and equipment
  • $250,000 allocated for a Southshore Habitat for Humanity home
  • $250,000 set for historic stone restoration at Cedar Grove Cemetery
  • New CDC authorized to help Housing Authority build new units

Article 17 saw the approval of approximately $2.5 million in Community Preservation Act funding for 10 diverse local projects. The largest single appropriation was $1,175,000 for Phase 2 of the Marshfield High School ball fields, which will fund lighting, scoreboards, and sound systems to increase the fields' utility.

Other significant projects include $250,000 for the restoration of fallen and weathered stones at Cedar Grove Cemetery and $250,000 to assist Southshore Habitat for Humanity in building an affordable home. The Habitat project sparked discussion regarding local preference. Erin Mcu, Executive Director of Southshore Habitat for Humanity, explained that under state Local Initiative Program (LIP) rules, they cannot legally guarantee the home to a Marshfield resident for a single-unit project, though they welcome local applicants.

Voters also approved $25,000 to help the Marshfield Housing Authority establish a Community Development Corporation (CDC). Carrie Richardson explained that the CDC structure is necessary because the Housing Authority is legally restricted from undertaking new construction projects. All 10 projects were approved by a majority vote.

Motion: To appropriate funds for the 10 listed CPC projects.
